Elsewhere the American narrative debut of photographer Katherine Oktober Matthews, is the trace of a lesson hard learned — that no matter how far you travel you can’t escape yourself. As she moves across Europe and the western United States, Matthews portrays in honest words and stark images what she is still coming to understand: The one thing you take along with you everywhere is yourself.
Katherine Oktober Matthews is an American artist living in Amsterdam. Working primarily in photography, text, and moving pictures, Matthews’s projects seek to understanding what it means to live simultaneously as a discrete individual and as part of endless series of connected systems.
In 2018 Leaping Man will release a collectible first edition of her insightful and personal document, Elsewhere. At a spare and rich 14,000 words punctuated with almost 50 photographs, the edition will be limited to 30 copies. Though the design is still evolving, the final artifact will be artfully designed and hand-constructed with a sewn binding. It will be the inaugural release in LM’s publishing program and will within a year be followed by a hardcover trade edition. As with all LM projects, half of funds earned from the sale of Elsewhere will go directly to the artist; the remainder will be applied to production of the next LM project.
Offered right now is a limited edition of 35 chapbooks made from an excerpt of about 2500 words from Elsewhere. The interior, with photographs, is digitally printed. The cover is letterpress printed in Denver by Ghengis Kern. The chapbooks are hand sewn, and each one was numbered and signed in Amsterdam by Ms. Matthews.
We are proud to introduce Ms. Matthews to her readers.
